The $2 billion Legacy West development expected to rival the Shops at Legacy will actually do it one better.

It will be a high-end, luxury complement to the mixed-use neighborhood, says the architect behind the project.

"Legacy West is kind of a luxury alternative to the Shops at Legacy," Barry Hand, a Gensler studio director overseeing the design, told the Dallas Business Journal.

"It is intended to serve the growing corporate base that's developing on the west side of the toll road with Toyota and FedEx Office and other corporate citizens," Hand added.

The project's 38-acre initial phase is bound by Legacy Drive to the south; the Dallas North Tollway to the east; Communications Parkway to the west; and Headquarters Drive to the north. Plans include about 600 apartment homes, about 300,000 square feet of retail space, nearly 800,000 square feet of office space, a Renaissance hotel and four parking decks.

The amount of office space is dependent on a 565,000-square-foot office tower proposed for the northeast portion of Legacy West.

The overall vision of Legacy West is to include restaurants and retail within walking distance of the corporate campuses. Last week, Toyota held a welcome event to introduce key executives to Plano as it designs its new $350 million North American headquarters.

Construction is already underway on the FedEx Office corporate campus off Legacy Drive. Fehmi Karahan is the master developer behind Legacy West. KDC is developing the two corporate campuses.

Developer Robert Shaw is working on the apartment component of the project.

"This is an important lifestyle project that will bring amenities to the area around it," Hand told me. "The project is designed to be very walkable with distinctly different nodes throughout the project with a couple of different water features."
